March Programs @ Your Library

Preschool (Ages 3-5) Story Time   Inspire your future reader at our preschool story time. Join us for exciting stories selected just for children ages 3-5 years old. Programs will be held in Youth Services program room on Wednesday and Thursday mornings at 10:30 a.m.

American Girls History Mystery Book Club   This club for girls in 2nd-6th grade will meet the third Saturday of each month from 10:00 a.m. until noon in the YS program room. Registration is required as space is limited. Girls must sign up in YS for each meeting, check out the book or purchase your own copy, and finish the book before the meeting date. We will meet March 17th to discuss “Midnight in Lonesome Hollow: A Kit Mystery” by Kathleen Ernst, from 10:00-12:00. Girls MUST be registered to attend so please call 279-4863 x1514 to reserve a seat.

Come Celebrate Woman’s History Month with Marjory Stoneman Douglas: An Activist’s Life  Join the Friends of the Niceville Library as they host this enlightening program on Florida’s own “Marjory Stoneman Douglas: An Activist's Life.”  Author and historian, Jack E. Davis from the University of Florida will discuss the public life of Marjory Stoneman Douglas, who in 1998 died at age108 as Florida's longest living activist.
This FREE program will be held at the Niceville Community Center, 204 Partin Drive N., adjacent to the Library on Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at 11:00 am.   For more information or to reserve your spot call the library at 279-4863 ext 1504.  This exciting program is the third in a series “Florida: Then and Now” funded by a grant from the Florida Humanities Council.

Baby Bookworms   This lapsit program consists of music, stories and rhymes especially chosen to build the bond between you and your child. Program is suited for children from birth to age 3. Please meet in YS program room on 2nd & 4th Fridays each month. Prewalkers -9:30, Walkers up to age three-10:30. This month our programs are on March 9th & 23rd.

After School Program   “Catch the Magic School Bus” each month in Youth Services! Children ages 6-12 years old meet the second Tuesday of each month from 4:15-5:30 in the program room. Every month the program will focus on a different Magic School Bus book and will include fun facts, hands-on activities, cool science and of course a Ms. Frizzle mystery or two. Children are encouraged to check out related books and are always welcome to share what they’ve read and learned along the way. Space is limited so registration is required. Guest Speaker -   Lieutenant Macon from the Niceville PD will be a guest speaker in the Teen Space Thursday, March 8th @ 2:45 p.m. for ages 13-17. Lieutenant Macon will speak about several relevant issues that affect the lives of teens every day. Pizza will be served.

Scrabble Anyone? @ Niceville Library    Do you enjoy playing Scrabble? If so, here’s a great opportunity to have fun, meet new people and play some Scrabble, as the small conference room at the Niceville Public Library will be set up with Scrabble boards for the adult community to play and enjoy on Wednesday, March 7 and 21 beginning at 9:30 a.m. Please keep in mind that you don’t have to be an expert to participate and all skill levels are welcome. Niceville Library Teen Program

Thursday, March 8th, @ 2:45 pm, Lt. Macon from the Niceville Police Dept will be a guest speaker in the Teen Space area of the Niceville Public Library.  All area teens ages 13 - 17 are invited to hear Lt. Macon speak about several relevant issues that affect the lives of teens every day.  Refreshments will be served.

Feb. 15th&16th; “Stop, Drop & Read” The Children’s Park will have a surprise in the park along with a fire truck parked next to the entrance.

Following in Zora Neale Hurston’s Footsteps Author and guest speaker, Dr. Anna Lillios from the University of Central Florida will take you on a journey through an important time in Florida’s history as she shares the life of author, folklorist, and anthropologist Zora Neale Huston and the town where she grew up, Eatonville, FL. This FREE program will be held at the Niceville Community Center on Wednesday, February 8, at 11:00 am. Pamper Me Program It’s that time again.....”PAMPER ME”.....This year will be our 10th anniversary pampering the ladies of our community. “Pamper Me Program” will take place on Saturday, February 11, from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. in the Niceville Community Center. Admission is $3.00 per person and is for ladies ages 12 and older. Don’t miss this fun and relaxing program!

Looking Back @ Niceville’s History Come spend an evening with Elisa Mitchiner as she “Looks Back” on the rich heritage of historic Niceville, FL originally known as Boggy, Florida (up to 1910). Art Exhibit @ Your Library The artwork of the Joe Oliver will be on exhibit at the Niceville Library beginning February 1 - 29. Joe lives in Georgia and has trained with the American Impressionist Larry Smith and Watercolorist Judy Huang.

Also on exhibit at the Library are woodwork sculptures and overlays by Art Bellen. His work features miniature fully operational wagons, star war characters, furniture as well as a few larger pieces.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows is in theaters now.  Please note that this movie isn't based on a particular story by Arthur Conan Doyle.

 War Horse by Michael Morpurgo   Joey the horse recalls his experiences growing up on an English farm, his struggle for survival as a cavalry horse during World War I, and his reunion with his beloved master. An excellent choice for young fans of historical fiction, appropriate for older elementary and teen readers. In theaters now.


The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson Forty years after the disappearance of Harriet Vanger from the secluded island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger family, her octogenarian uncle hires journalist Mikael Blomqvist and Lisbeth Salander, an unconventional young hacker, to investigate.
