Niceville Library Cookie Swap The library will be hosting a Cookie Swap on Thursday, December 8 from 10:30 – 11:30 am. You can pick up an information sheet at the library. Author Book Signing @ the Library The Niceville Library will have an author’s book signing starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 19. Presenting her new book “Progeny of Lazarus” will be author Johanna Ridenow.

Johanna, started writing on a whim when a series didn’t end the way she thought it should. Encouraged by her friends and family she is writing a sequel.

November Art Display @ Your Library

The artwork of Sue Tarkin will be on exhibit at the Niceville Library throughout the month of November.

Her favorite medium is encaustic (painting with wax), but she also enjoys acrylics and oils and has started making fused glass jewelry in a microwave kiln.

Sue started taking classes at Artful things with Candace in 2004 and continued taking classes at the college with Lyn Rackley (watercolor and drawing) and JB Cobb (oils and drawing) and at the Art & Design Society in Fort Walton from great artists such as Roscoe Wallace (acrylics), Faye Jones (oils and encaustics), Dale Gauvin (oils), Kelly Bout (fused glass jewelry) and many more.

Since 2006 Sue has won five awards at the Northwest Florida Fair Fine Arts Show and one from the Beaux Art Exhibition at Westwood. She also has a painting published in the Blackwater Review of 2006.

She gives God the glory for the love of art and any talent she has and her ability to share it with her grandchildren and others including over 100 children at McGriff Head Start in Fort Walton where she teaches one day a week.

Sue encourages everyone to take advantage of the wonderful art classes available in this area and would be willing to guide you in the right direction for your particular interest.

Since she loves doing art so much she has accumulated quite a bit and will be willing to sell it at close to her cost for framing and materials and donating 20% to the library.

Sue says that artists seem to get attached to their artwork and think they will never do better so they hang onto it. Linda Kernick once said that if you give away so others will enjoy it, God will help you to create even better.

Art Exhibit at the Niceville Public Library

The art work of Robert (Bob) Reese will be on exhibit at the Niceville Library throughout the month of October.

His favorite medium is oil painting. Seascapes, landscapes and aeronautical paintings are his subjects. Recently one of his pieces was selected to be on display at the new courthouse.

Mr. Reese will donate half of the proceeds from any sale to the library.

Tutoring for Teens at the Niceville Library with Mrs. Rachel Reese begins Wednesday, Sept. 7 and will be available Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm. A sign up sheet is located in our Teen Space or for more information call the YS dept. at 850-279-4683 x 1514.

Mrs. Reese has supported a wide range of academic populations including those at local school districts, college campuses, juvenile justice facilities, and the public library in Denton, Texas. She has a Masters degree in secondary mathematics education and is proficient in English composition and grammer, as well as the social and hard sciences. Mrs. Reese is a writer of young adult fiction and genera fiction short stories.

It is critical that House and Senate budget conferees fund State Aid to Public Libraries at $21.2 million during the coming conference process.
On April 7, 2011 the Florida Senate adopted a budget that completely eliminates State Aid to Libraries funding. The House budget includes $17.7 million for State Aid but $21.2 million is needed to avoid reductions in federal funds that support services Floridians rely on. State funding for libraries has already been reduced by a third in recent years. A further reduction would come on top of local cuts in library funding as deep as 40%. This would mean branch library closings in large and small communities.
The House and Senate will appoint budget conferees soon to reconcile the differences between their budgets so that the legislature can complete its work and adjourn on May 6 as scheduled.

Florida Humanities Program with Dr. “Fritz” Davis
Dr. “Fritz” Davis, Professor of History, FSU at Niceville Community Center, Thur., March 17 at 7:00 pm. The Man Who Saved Sea Turtles: Archie Carr provides a thorough introduction to Archie Carr (1909 –1987), his wife Marjorie, and the wildlife and wild lands they fought to save. In this illustrated talk, Dr. Davis will also discuss Carr’s conservation efforts and the implications of the oil spill for the Gulf’s sea turtles. A lifelong naturalist, Frederick Davis studied the history of science at Harvard, the University of Florida, and Yale where he received his Ph.D. Dr. Davis teaches the history of science and environmental history at FSU. He is the author of The Man Who Saved Sea Turtles: Archie Carr and the Origins of Conservation Biology. This FREE program is funded by a grant through the Florida Humanities Council and local grant partners NWFS College, and the Friends of the Niceville Library.

Reduced County funding may endanger your free library services.

Due to revenue shortfalls, Okaloosa County Commission is considering major reductions in County funding for library services in the coming fiscal year, which may impact your free library service. The Okaloosa County Public Library Cooperative, which provides the funding mechanism for County-resident access to City libraries, may be cut extensively in the County’s budget balancing process.

Please contact your County Commissioners and let them know that County funding for libraries is important to you before May 1st.

Ø Fewer programs for children and adults;
Ø Maintenance and updates of our Library Automation System being charged to the library;
Ø Possible reductions to our library courier services;
Ø Possible cuts to our Interlibrary Loan services;
Ø Replacing computers only when they stop working instead of replacing them every 4-5 years;
Ø Reduction in hours of operation and staff;
Ø Reduced funding for services like:

Author Book Discussion hosted by the Friends of the Niceville Library

Join the Friends of the Niceville Library as they host a book discussion with author J. R. Thompson and his exciting new novel From the Wilderness. The program will be at the Niceville Community Center on Tuesday, January 26 at 5:00 p.m.

From the wilderness of Minnesota comes a moving story about a magnificent animal that was born as a result of a union between a beautiful female German Shepherd and a lone wolf. Filled with action, suspense, and a heart-wrenching conclusion, From the Wilderness is reminiscent of Old Yeller and White Fang.

The author will also share information on the plight of the wolf. A book signing will follow the discussion. This free program is for ages 8 – adult. Please call the Niceville Library at 729-4090 to reserve a seat or if you have further questions.

The library will be hosting a Holiday Cookie Swap on Thursday, December 10 from 10:30 – 11:30 am in the library. Each participant will bring 5 dozen cookies of one type and go home with a variety! The number of cookies may be changed depending on the number of people registered. Please bring the recipe and extra containers to bring home cookies. The Niceville Public Library will be joining with Strictly Weavers Guild of the Emerald Coast observe Spinning and Weaving Week, October 5-11, 2009. Guild members will be presenting demonstrations in the foyer of the library on Saturday, October 10 from 10:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. They will also have an exhibit of handspun and hand-woven items in the library during the week.
